Follow the money, will ya?

''Follow the money'' c'est cette phrase emblématique du personnage de Deep Throat dans le scandale du Watergate. Ou plutôt c'est le dialogue emblématique du personnage de Deep Throat dans le scénario des Hommes du Président (All the President's men) de William Goldman, et ça, alors que Deep Throat a révélé son identité, beaucoup de monde et notamment beaucoup de journalistes l'ont oublié.
Qu'est-ce que tout cela nous apprend ?

Que le dialogue de William Goldman était vraiment bon (le scénario lui a valu un second Oscar après celui obtenu pour Butch Cassidy et le Kid),

Que le cinéma (l'image) est bien supérieur à la littérature (l'écrit) en terme d'impact sur les consciences,

Que si les journalistes ne font pas leur travail plus scrupuleusement on est mal barrés pour être bien informés face à des hommes politiques qui consacrent de plus en plus d'énergie à assurer leur communication (voire flatter les medias pour mieux les tenir) :

In the most recent example, all the president's men slimed and intimidated Newsweek by accusing it of being an accessory to 17 deaths for its errant Koran story; led by Scott McClellan [porte-parole de la Maison Blanche], they said it was unthinkable that any American guard could be disrespectful of Islam's holy book. Then came the pièce de résistance of Nixon mimicry: a Pentagon report certifying desecrations of the Koran by American guards was released two weeks after the Newsweek imbroglio, at 7:15 p.m. on a Friday, to assure it would miss the evening newscasts and be buried in the Memorial Day weekend's little-read papers.
