[...]Internet billionaires Mark Cuban, 48, and Todd Wagner, 45, are determined to change how and when we see films. Cuban and Wagner also made a dotcom killing, selling Broadcast.com to Yahoo! for $5.7 billion in 1999. They have set up 2929 Entertainment, which has a number of companies that run cinemas and distribute films to theatres, on cable and on DVD. It also helped to finance Good Night, and Good Luck, and has backed powerful documentaries such as Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room and Capturing the Friedmans. Its most controversial plan is to allow us to see films in cinemas, on cable and on DVD on the same day. At the moment, the Hollywood studios adhere to strict “windows”. First, a film is released in cinemas; three months later, on DVD; finally, on cable. The founders of 2929 think distribution strategy is outdated and, as piracy bites into profits, stupid. “If I hear a song I like on the radio,” says Wagner, “I don’t have to wait three months to buy it on CD. We are letting the consumers decide how they consume movies.”Tous les films qu'ils ont financés (je n'ai pas vu ni l'intention de voir Bubble) sont des films louables au niveau du contenu, de l'ambition de faire un film pour cibler telle ou telle population. On en redemande. Mais si tous ces films auront certainement un public plus large en sortant le même jour en salles, en DVD et en Pay-per-view sur le cable que va-t-il rester dans les salles ? Les films les plus bourrins ? Ceux qui déjà nous polluent le paysage avec leurs campagnes d'affichage avant même qu'on se retrouve enfermé dans un multiplexe ? Est-ce que tout ceci ne contribue pas à creuser encore le fossé entre le public qui va naturellement au ciné et ceux qui le désertent depuis 30 ans ?
This has infuriated the big cinema chains, which have said they won’t touch films released this way. They haven’t had to worry much yet. The first film released simultaneously by 2929 — Bubble, a low-budget murder mystery directed by Steven Soderbergh — made almost no money in the theatres owned by 2929 or on DVD. La question n'est pas simple, certains on le mérite de la poser et de vouloir faire bouger un système qui s'est endormi sur son aura, sur ces paillettes que certains fabriquent aujourd'hui beaucoup plus rapidement et bien moins cher.
